What is Comprehensive Car Insurance?
Comprehensive insurance provides the highest level of protection for both you and your car. It covers your vehicle against theft as well as accidental, hail, or fire damage. You're also covered for claims made against you if your vehicle accidentally causes damage to other people or their property.
This type of insurance covers damage to your car and third party vehicles regardless of who is at fault, making it ideal for drivers seeking complete peace of mind.
In our experience, the extensive nature of Comprehensive Car Insurance means that it is the ideal policy type. Get a quote and find out how much Comprehensive Car Insurance costs today.
Fire, theft and hijacking cover
In South Africa, nearly 50 cars are stolen every day. With our Comprehensive Car Insurance, you can claim the cost of replacing your vehicle if it’s stolen or hijacked.
You're also covered if a fire causes accidental damage or destruction to your vehicle, in which case we'll pay to repair or replace it.
Accident Cover
Comprehensive insurance protects your vehicle against accidental or intentional damage caused by a third party. In the event that your vehicle is written off, your policy covers the costs of repairing or replacing it.
When you add our BetterCar Value option to your Comprehensive policy, you will be paid for an equivalent model that is one year newer .
Road Assist
Comprehensive cover includes rapid roadside emergency solutions so you’re not at a loss when things go wrong. If you’re involved in an accident, you can rest assured that we will tow your vehicle from the scene and cover the costs of subsequent storage.
We also have you covered if your car has a flat tyre or battery, or if you lock your keys inside the vehicle. We provide up to three call-outs per year for mechanical or electrical breakdowns. If we can’t fix the problem at the roadside, we can tow you to the nearest dealer. And if you're left stranded more than 100 km from home, we'll arrange and pay for transportation, accommodation, or a car hire for you and up to six passengers.

You automatically get AutoSOS, an impact detector available through the Auto & General app that sends medical help in a severe accident.

Our Service Promise is a commitment that we will always give you excellent service.
What is the difference between Comprehensive and Third-Party Insurance?
The main difference between the two is the level of coverage they offer. Comprehensive cover provides the widest range of cover, including:
- Car accidents and collisions, for both your vehicle and the third party’s vehicle, regardless of who is at fault.
- Theft, hijacking and vandalism.
- Damage from the elements, like hail or storms.
- Fire damage.
Third-Party Only Insurance provides cover for damages for injuries caused by the policyholder to a third-party’s vehicle or property. It does not provide cover for your own vehicle.
How does a Third-Party Insurance claim work?
You must report the event to your insurer and provide the necessary details and documentation. Submit supporting documentation, including a police report, if relevant. The insurer will investigate the claim, determine liability, and compensate the third party for their damages or injuries, excluding coverage for your own vehicle.
Who is considered the third party?
The third-party refers to a person other than the policyholder and the insurer. It typically refers to individuals, property owners, or parties involved in a covered event or accident for which the policyholder may be liable.
When do I need third-party car insurance?
It’s advisable to get Third-Party Insurance when you have an older or low-value vehicle and a limited budget.
